about sumac project

Sumac Project provides an opportunity for artists/writers/musicians to generate, and experiment during their self-directed residency, in a three-level saltbox style home. We encourage artists to strengthen their practice while making meaningful connections and artistic cooperation. Committed to supporting cultural, artistic exchange, and understand the importance of having a flexible space and artistic community. Emerging and professional artists, collectives, and collaborating partners in all artistic disciplines are invited to experience the unique opportunity our rural residency has to offer. We encourage community initiatives from intimate workshops to large-scale performances. Sumac Project is committed to supporting diverse communities including, BIPPOC, LGBTQ2+, and mothers with children. We are not currently wheelchair accessible. If you have any concerns about accessibility, please get in touch and we will do our best to make accommodations.

Conveniently located 150km northeast of Toronto atop rolling country hills in the traditional territory of the Mississauga Anishinaabeg. Sumac Project invites you to relax, recharge, and wander. Enjoy a campfire under the stars, dive into the refreshing lakes of the Kawarthas, or simply be inspired by the stillness. Immerse yourself in rural community events and traditions. Attain clarity and focus by exploring the many hiking trails, snow-shoeing, or cross-country skiing.

Sumac Project invites up to two artists in residence concurrently, from one week to one month to pursue their vision, focus, and rejuvenate. Artists will be given a large bedroom with a writer's desk, semi-private professional studio space, and a workshop. Artists are welcome to investigate and explore our thirty acres or go further afield to the many trails and open spaces. Gain the freedom to focus on your practice, time to imagine, and ponder at Sumac Project.
